This is a strange time for us all; a lot has changed and we have had to also change to be able to adapt to the new lifestyle patterns we are living. For those in education, we know that you have certainly had a lot of change happen; and perhaps have had to learn to do things which you didn’t think you needed to do!

Homeschooling in isolation got us feeling like……..

Our dance tutor Mibinti and Assistant Communications Officer Danielle; know full well how it feels to try and keep deadlines through the isolation period. We too have had to adjust to the changes, and still try and manage our time to get our work done, so we wanted to share with you some of our tips for studying in Isolation.

  1. Break down tasks! Looking at all your work in one go is a no go! It can seem daunting and feels like you’re never going to reach the end (Believe me we know!) So set yourself small, reasonable goals which you feel like you can achieve each day, and when you do achieve them- Reward yourself! (We particularly like chocolate and cake!)

2. Stay in touch with Friends and Family– We may not be able to see each other because of lockdown, but thanks to the power that is social media and technology, everyone we care about is in the palm of our hands. Isolation, doesn’t mean we have to feel isolated; stay in touch with those you care about and those who can motivate you to get the work done. How about a skype study session? In these strange times, we all have the ability to support and be there for one another; even if for now it’s only through a screen.

3. MUSIC! For us music is a big motivator, and can affect how we feel. So we always pick some feel-good music to listen to, to help us feel upbeat and motivated.

We’ve put together a playlist of our favorite uplifting and feel good songs to help keep your lockdown in high spirits. You can also find out the most recommended warm-up and cool-down songs for those of you who are staying dancing at home.

4. Which brings us onto point number4;DANCE!… Or whatever makes you happy!

As dancers, dance is something that always makes us feel good, so even in times of isolation, we are trying to make sure we still make time for it. We may not have a fancy studio, but with some music playing in the background and a bit of space, we can still fulfill one of our biggest passions! And so can you! In these strange times doing things that make us feel happy and give us a distraction from the world around us is super important for our health and wellbeing, so whatever it is, be sure to take the time to do it.

5. EMBRACE THE SUNSHINE

If you are anything like us, trying to study indoors when the sun is beaming; is an impossible task. Why would you want your head in paperwork when the weather has been so wonderful….. So embrace it! We love to set up our work areas outside, or when that’s not possible, ensure that we go for a daily walk, before studying to get us in the spirit, or after as our reward and wind-down time. Either way, don’t stay stuck up on your computer or textbooks all day, get out and enjoy the sunshine whilst it lasts.

And finally….. DON’T GIVE UP!

Don’t be too hard on yourself! If you try something and it doesn’t work, or if you can’t quite get the words onto paper today…. Just try again tomorrow, a different way. Whatever works for you, it’s not important. What’s important is that you stick at it, even when the tasks feel never-ending or impossible. Time will pass, and slowly the to-do list will go down, and you’ll thank yourself at the end of it!
